Full Version: Rockband/Rudimentary maths question

You know when you play multplayer Rockband and you can add you star power multipliers together? Well, I am a retard when it comes to numbers so is it better to have a X4 multiplier for 20 seconds or a X2 multiplier for 40 seconds or is that the same thing?

I know this is a stupid question but I wasted my time during maths class drawing pictures in the back of my book and now I am paying the price.

Well, it is the same thing in theory, you would get the same amount of benefit from both of those. But in Rock Band, which of those would be better to use would depend on the situation. For example, if you had a particularly busy 20 seconds of a song for a few players, and provided you could all keep your multiplyer going for that 20 seconds, then obviously that would be a better time to have a 4x multiplyer than to have a 2x multiplyer, followed by 20 seconds more with 2x when you aren't doing much playing. So yeah, basically it is the same thing, but it all depends on what you are playing for that time and how well you play it (becuase it may well be easier to keep something good going for 20 seconds than for 40 seconds).
Why do you ask anyway? Dispute with Jo?

What rob said. But to be less confusing: Same thing. Assuming one point per second (so like, Weezer) each scenario would net you 80pts.

Actually, if you look at a 40-second time period, choosing the x4 option means you get 80 points in the first 20 seconds then 20 points in the following 20 seconds. Choosing x2 means you only get 80 points in all 40 seconds. Choosing a good 20 seconds to use it in (lots of notes, if you can get them right) means you'll get even more of a bonus. Plus (not really knowing how the game works) you'll start earning the next bonus once you've finished the current bonus? Thus adding even more to the value of the x4. Maybe.

This is correct, except for being completely wrong about how the generation of the bonus energy works. Within the same forty seconds, and assuming all individual multipliers are already at full before the forty seconds starts and no-one misses a note, you'll score more points by using both multipliers for half the time than by spreading them over the whole time. Rob and ftookl are correct in their claim, but it's a comparison that actually serves to make clear that the times four multiplier will score you more at the end of the same period of time, since after half the time you've already reached the same score.

True, I could be petty and say that's not what he asked, but I genuinely didn't consider that.
