Oh dear god no. Can there be anyone who thinks this is actually a good idea? And even if it was, looking at some of the dross that producer has put his name to fills me with dread at the prospect of this actually happening.

Christ. I could hardly care less anymore, there are so many in development.

However, I can handle Robocop being redone by Darren Aronovsky, as I'm interested to see what someone like him can do with it, and I'm relieved to find out the Oldboy remake is going to be a straight adaptation of the comic book rather than a remake of the film, but this is horrible. Also the original (along with The Thing, also being remade) had, and still has top notch special effects which don't need to be updated. And Michael Ironside is irreplaceable.

The Thing's being remade? I didn't know about that one. God-fucking-damn.

In slightly better news, I'm holding out hope for this. It's like a wet dream in action film form.

Bollocks eh? Apparently this guys also doing Battle Royale. At least if he stuck to doing crap originals he wouldn't be shitting all over someone elses work too...

Anybody in the mood for some more remake badness?

To be honest, the FotN story elicits not much more than a "grrr", but the idea of a remake of Alien fills me with furious anger.

Why, why, why, why, why, why, why... and why the hell not if they can still get bums on seats without the extravagance of paying someone to write a decent original story. /greed

From that story it sounds more like an Alien prequel produced by Ridley Scott. I can't see him pointlessly remaking his own film so surely that edges it into good thing territory.

If true, it edges it into slightly less bad thing, but not neccesarily good thing.

Well thank fuck for that. I think I'd have gone an shot him if he'd even so much as hinted at remaking the first one. Impossible without Sigourney Weaver.

Well there wouldn't be much point to that story, "Look, the hero and sole survivor is a woman!" doesn't have quite the same kick as it did in 1979. Also Sigourney Weaver lost all my respect in Aliens 4: The Film That Should Have Never Been, so I wouldn't mind seeing someone else in her role anyway.

Both fair points. Though I'd wager that 4 would have been even worse without her.

Hey! How about this:

It's 1973 in the mid-Atlantic. A young great white shark enrols in Mid-Atlantic Ridge University where he quickly rises to the top of his classes in Sea-Law and Fish-History. He meets a beautiful cheerleading hammerhead named Sally and for a while, his life seems to be perfect. However, all is not well at Mid-Atlantic Ridge University and our hero falls foul of The Crustaceans , a violent gang of lobsters who have escaped from a New York fish restaurant despite the unyielding efforts of then Sergeant Martin Brody to recapture them.

After a graphic beating and rape sequence in which Sally is killed and the protagonist is viciously nipped on the fins, he turns his back on his life of virtue and sets out to wreak his terrible revenge on Brady, who he blames for knocking over the first domino in the chain that eventually destroyed everything he held dear.

Romance, drama and scenes of graphic swim bladder violation:
NEXT SUMMER - JAWS ZERO.

(I don't like the idea of a Alien prequel.)

If Spielberg made one I'm sure you'd still go and see it. But anyway I'm not saying the idea of an Alien prequel fills me with sunshine and lollipops and that I'd go and see it even if they replaced the Alien with Jar Jar Binks and had him eliminate the cast of Final Destination. What I am saying is that Ridley Scott and to some extent his not quite as good also-scott make some quite good films and that it's not as immediately hateful as say, Joss Whedon remaking Blade Runner. Their involvement moves it from boo news to ooh news. Besides, you liked Star Trek enough, there might be something to this reboot lark.

Star Trek wasn't primarily concerned with telling the story of a mysterious preternatural force from beyond the stars. A prequel is stupid because you either don't deal with the alien's origin in which case why make a prequel in the first place, or you do the equivalent of explaining where the shark came from.

The Star Trek reboot was about losing 40 years' worth of back story of no interest to anyone but the largest shut ins. Rebooting Alien means either doing a straight reshoot of one of the originals or filling in details that are better unfilled in.

Besides, they already remade Alien. It was called Alien 3 and no one liked it.

Besides, the only possile "origins" story that could possibly be needed would be to show how the W-Y Company knew about the aliens, and they did that in AvP.

Recently, the studios seem intent on tarnishing our memories of the cinematic greats. I hear they're remaking Taxi Driver with Shia LaBeouf.

Are you taking the piss?

EDIT: Thankfully yes, it seems you are taking the piss. However a quick look on wiki reveals that a few years ago there was talk of De Niro and Scorcese working on a proper sequel. There doesn't seem to be anything said about it since 2005 though.
